The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department has some great events to get kids ready to join Youth Coed Basketball! During the first week of December, the Eastside High School Basketball team will be providing a skills clinic and Free Throw Contest will be held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose (MLK) Center.
The free skills clinics on Tuesday, Dec. 2 and Wednesday, Dec. 3, offer a chance for youth to work with seasoned varsity players and their coaches on the fundamentals of the game. The clinics are from 6 to 8 p.m. at the MLK Center and are open to the public.
The Free Throw Contest on Saturday, Dec. 6, is a chance to show off the skills learned at the clinics! There are two time periods for separate age brackets: 5 to 8 year-olds can play from 5 to 6 p.m and 9 to 14 year-olds throw from 6 to 7 p.m. There will be chances to win prizes and cheer on friends and future teammates!
Through fitness, fair play and sportsmanship, Youth Coed Basketball teaches youth, 5 to14 years-old, how character counts on and off the court. There are no try outs, and each participant gets to play. Registration is currently open until December 15, 2014.
Weekly practice starts Monday, Dec. 1 at the MLK Center, which is located at 1028 NE 14th St., from 6–8 p.m. Games begin in January, and run through March 2015, taking place in Alachua County and the surrounding areas on Saturdays. Time of play varies by age group.
Those registering by Monday, Dec. 1, will receive a $10 discount. Registration closes Monday, Dec. 15. For detailed information on age groups, Parents Association for Youth Sports (P.A.Y.S.) requirements and prices, visit our Youth Activities Web page.
