Summer Heatwave Concludes with Championship Games and Pool Party

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) draws another successful Summer Heatwave program to a close by featuring two great events. Several coed basketball championship games will be played Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center (MLK) and a Back-to-School Pool Party will take place at Andrew R. Mickle Sr. Pool Sunday, Aug. 5.

This year, the Summer Heatwave Coed Basketball League served more than 600 youth from nine-18 years old. Two other pool parties had several hundred youth in attendance. Summer Heatwave is a partnership between PRCA and the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office 8th Judicial Court Circuit. The program is designed to encourage positive engagement for youth with their community and members of law enforcement, while having fun with friends. Since 2012, the availability of programs such as Summer Heatwave can be tied to a 17 percent reduction in youth contacts with the juvenile justice system. Not only has fitness been promoted this summer, life skills classes were mandatory for players. Coaches also talked to their teams about character and making good choices.

Come see some great basketball games and cheer on these talented players! This year, there were more than 600 participants from Alachua, Levy, Columbia and Marion Counties. The championship games will be held at the MLK Center, located at 1028 NE 14th St., Thursday, Aug. 2. These games are the culmination of hard teamwork that has been happening since mid-June. The game schedule is as follows:
