Bridge to Ring Park Closed
The bridge to Ring Park, starting at the parking area at the Elks Club, is closed for repairs and will remain closed until further notice. The Ring Park boardwalk received damage during Tropical Storm Fay and will be repaired. Ring Park can be accessed from the NW 16th Avenue walk-in entrance, as well as the neighborhood entrance. All other parks and nature parks are cleared and open to the public.  
Artists of the City II Exhibition at the Thomas Center Galleries
Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the opening of the Artists of the City II art exhibition which showcases the City of Gainesville’s creative talent. Back by popular demand, this is the second time that City employees have exhibited at the Thomas Center. The exhibition will run from August 23 – September 21, 2008 in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery and a free public reception will be held Wednesday, September 3 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Read more... 25KBAdobe Acrobat Reader is required to view this page
A Beaux-Arts Ball “Roaring 20s” costume gala fundraiser will be held on September 27
beauxartsjpg.jpgThe Cultural Affairs Division will be inaugurating the Thomas Center Theatre for Young Audiences in spring 2009. The program will take place in the Grace and Sidney Knight Garden Theatre. City Offices Observe Labor Day Holiday on Monday, September 1
In observance of Labor Day, all City offices will be closed Monday, September 1. RTS offices will be also be closed and there will be no RTS bus service. ADA paratransit service will not be running on this date, except for dialysis appointments. Curbside residential collection service for solid waste, recycling and yard trash will not be affected by the Labor Day Holiday. The collection schedule will be according to the regular schedule for Monday through Friday, September 1 – 5. 
Shorty Basketball at the MLK Center will begin the week of September 17
Shorty Basketball is a program designed for boys and girls ages 3 to 6. The goal is to teach the basics of the game, while simultaneously enhancing motor skills. Each week a different skill is introduced including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, teamwork and rules. Fall Baseball is now Accepting Registration!

Free Fridays Plaza Series Continues!
Cultural Affairs invites the public to join us for the Let’s Go Downtown Free Fridays Plaza Series, the annual series of family-friendly free concerts in the Downtown Community Plaza. Featuring some of the best local and regional musicians, this series runs through October and is highly anticipated by its many fans.     Work of Gainesville Artist Featured on Poster of Nationally Acclaimed Fall Arts Festival

Leslie Peebles, a local painter and printmaker, has been showing her artwork in North Central Florida for 12 years.     The Used Blues Band to Perform at Gainesville’s Free Fridays Concert Series on September 5
    Used Blues, hailing from Gainesville, Florida, is a four-man group focused on performing the best of all forms of blues music.     Chupaskabra and Sweet City Action to Perform at Free Fridays Concert Series on August 29
    Chupaskabra is a seven-piece ska band based in Gainesville. They say their music is “all about making you want to move your feet!     Flag Football Registration Begins on Monday, August 18
    The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is readying to begin registering boys ages 4 to 6 for flag football. Flag football is a version of American football where the rules are very similar to the professional game.     Girls Fall Softball is Ready to Begin!
    Girls Fall Softball registration began on August 1 and will continue through the end of the month. Fall softball will begin practice in September and will run through the month of November.     Buck Bay Mobile Home Relocation
    The City of Gainesville Housing Division is still accepting applications for its Displaced Mobile Home Owner/Tenant Assistance Program, which provides financial assistance to eligible residents to relocate from the Buck Bay Mobile Home Park.
