Valentine's Day Jewel Box Concert at the Historic Thomas Center

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center Saturday, Feb. 14. The concert features international touring artists Flagship Romance and special guest, the renowned songwriter from England, Rupert Wates.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Rupert Wates performs at 7:30 p.m. Flagship Romance will then perform two, 45-minute sets, with a 20-minute intermission starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door - cash or check only.

Flagship Romance consists of real-life lovers, singers and songwriters Shawn Fisher and Jordyn Jackson. To describe their sound, they have coined the term “Harmonic Alternative Folk.” Anchored by Fisher’s unique guitar playing, Flagship Romance compositions are centered around and feature the couple’s unclassifiable vocal blend. The story of Flagship Romance represents more than just an opportunity to hear two individually talented performers using their abilities to create something bigger than themselves. It is an invitation to witness an actual couple with a shared passion and chemistry, doing what they love with whom they love, with a desire to change the world one song at a time.

Rupert Wates was born in London, and, in the words of Kitchen Sink House Concerts in Arizona, is “a ridiculously talented musician.” Since September 2006, he has been based in the U.S. His music has found a warm reception in America. The Forwardian Arts Society, in describing a recent performance, wrote, “It was as if Mr. Wates was standing at the well of humanity and drawing up the emotions and experiences of mankind to the surface where they could nourish those who partook of them from his vocal and musical instruments.”

Samples of Flagship Romances music can be found on their YouTube channel at or on their website at A photograph of Flagship Romance can be viewed at Samples of Rupert Wates can be found on his website at

Guests are invited to spend Valentine’s Day as a couple or individual doing something different than going out to eat. They may bring their favorite wine or champagne, and an attendant will tend their bottle. Plastic glasses will be provided, but guests are welcome to bring their own glass, as well. Authentic homemade Indian cuisine will be available for purchase.
