Cathy DeWitt and Friends perform Both Sides Now: A Tribute to the Music of Joni Mitchell at the “Free Fridays” Concert Series Friday, Oct. 5 at the Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville.
Rolling Stone called Joni Mitchell "one of the greatest songwriters ever," and AllMusic has stated, "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century." This “Free Fridays” tribute concert is dedicated to showcasing some of Joni Mitchell’s greatest compositions, especially from her first decade of recordings.
The evening will be led by Cathy DeWitt (vocals and piano), and it features some of Gainesville's finest performers, including Janet Rucker (guitar, piano and vocals), Maggie Rucker and Samara Golabuk Crutchfield (vocals), David Beede (dulcimer) Michael Derry (guitar), Brad Bangstad (piano), Ron Thomas (bass) and Rob Rothschild (drums).
Joni Mitchell was famous for using unusual guitar tunings, and acoustic guitarist Janet Rucker will play in five different tunings at the “Free Fridays” concert. Mitchell’s eclectic vocal phrasing will be handled by the band’s four female singers, The Joni’s, who weave their voices together for some beautiful four-part harmonies.
In the tradition of Mitchell’s eclectic compositional style, the show includes a mixture of her most iconic and somewhat lesser-known songs, including “Both Sides Now,” “Chelsea Morning,” “Twisted” and “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio.”
“Free Fridays” is presented by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. It is funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council and Culture Builds Florida. “Free Fridays” runs 8-10 p.m. each Friday night, from May 4 to Oct. 19 at Bo Diddley Plaza, 111 E.
