Sediment Removal at Sweetwater Wetlands Park Scheduled to Begin this Week
The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (PRCA) and Public Works Departments wish to advise visitors of Sweetwater Wetlands Park of the yearly sediment removal project. Certain areas of the park will be closed to the public access during the work; the rest of the park will remain open.
Over the course of a year, several tons of sand and debris from Sweetwater Branch builds up in the sediment basin on the northern side of the park and hinders the function of the basin and the trash removal forebay. These two areas are the vital first steps for cleaning the water that flows through the wetlands of the park and into Paynes Prairie. The creek’s flow will be temporarily diverted around the sediment basin to a ditch west of the forebay. The sediment will be collected and removed off site.
The work will require heavy equipment and increased vehicular traffic on the service road. Visitors are asked to take caution when crossing the service road, and to be aware of the noise that will be generated during the project.
Sweetwater Wetlands Park is located at 325 SW Williston Road in Gainesville. The work is scheduled to begin later this week and is expected to continue for approximately a month.
