The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shake Rag Cultural Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center Friday, June 23, featuring The Grascals. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.evansmedisource.com.
The Grascals are a six-piece bluegrass band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 2004, the band has gained a level of notability by playing on the Grand Ole Opry and in bluegrass festivals around the country. In the summer of 2004, Dolly Parton began to show interest in wanting to play with The Grascals. Soon after, they became Parton's opening act, as well as her band.
Performing at Dollywood and eventually the Grand Ole Opry, the band quickly became one of the up-and-coming bluegrass bands of the year. In 2005, the band won the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year Award, as well as the Song of the Year award for "Me and John and Paul." In 2006 and 2007, they won the IBMA Entertainer of the Year.
Samples of The Grascals’ music are available on their website at http://grascals.com/videos/. A photograph of The Grascals may be viewed at https://www.flickr.com/photos/gainesville/34419393914/.
Concert-goers may bring their favorite wine or champagne, and an attendant will tend their bottle. Plastic glasses will be provided, but guests are welcome to bring their own glasses, as well. Authentic, homemade Indian cuisine will be available for purchase.
