The Thomas Center Galleries announces the opening of the Showcasing Student Art - Elementary Schools Exhibition presented by the Alachua County Public Schools Visual Arts Program, which is scheduled to run Saturday, April 5-Saturday, May 3 in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery. The exhibition includes 88 works of art that were created during the 2013-2014 school year in Alachua County elementary schools by students who were selected by 29 teachers from 26 participating schools.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department and the Evergreen Cemetery Association of Gainesville, Inc. will dedicate the State of Florida Historical Marker Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at the association’s annual meeting at Evergreen Cemetery. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Jest Fest!, a free, fun, family-friendly event produced by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department returns this April with a great lineup of international stars. In its inaugural season last year, thousands of captive audience members, innocent bystanders, gawkers and curious on-lookers were stricken with contagious, uncontrollable laughter caught from the antics of an impressive assembly of some of the world’s finest cirque and comedy/variety acts.

Join a tradition of artistic excellence by submitting an artist application for the 33rd Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show. Recognized as one of the top fine art shows in the country, the festival is sponsored by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. On Saturday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 9, more than 250 artists will display original oils and acrylics, vibrant watercolors, captivating sculptures, dazzling jewelry, decorative ceramics and vivid photography in historic downtown Gainesville. They will compete for $19,000 in cash prizes and purchase awards. Applications for the Downtown Festival & Art Show are available upon request at 352-393-8536 or online at http://www.gvlculturalaffairs.org. The application deadline is Friday, May 5, 2014.

University Ave., just three miles east of downtown Gainesville.

Spring is here and now is a great time to plant with natives, which are adapted to drought and the heat of summer. Take advantage of the largest offering of native plants in north Florida during the 2014 Spring Native Plant Sale, at Morningside Nature Center, which is located at 3540 E. University Ave. on the Native Plant Sale is open to the general public Saturday, April 5 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. An exclusive member's only sale is Friday, April 4 from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and is open to members of the Friends of Nature Parks (FNP) and the Paynes Prairie chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS) only. Memberships are available at the gate. Cash, checks and debit/credit cards are accepted. The sale is hosted cooperatively by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, the Friends of Nature Parks and the Paynes Prairie chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department welcomes Alicia Antone as its new development and partnership program coordinator. Her primary responsibilities include forging new relationships and strengthening existing relationships with partners, sponsors, funders and grantors. This includes conducting a full-range of activities required to prepare, submit and manage new grant proposals for public and private funders and identifying sources of restricted and unrestricted funding.
