Heavy Petty returns to the “Free Fridays” Concert Series with a tribute to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Friday, Oct. 9 from 8-10 p.m. Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty is one of the most famous musicians to hail from Gainesville, Florida. Heavy Petty is Gainesville’s own Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band. The band first played on Valentine's night in 2010 at Common Grounds in downtown Gainesville. Since then, the five-piece rock ‘n’ roll band has played many different events and venues in and around Gainesville. Heavy Petty prides itself in playing Tom Petty songs with attention paid to strict interpretation, but also in being able to rock out, have a lot of fun and get the crowd involved.

The "City Manager’s Biweekly Report to the City Commission" provides information about significant upcoming activities, projects, and meetings in the City of Gainesville over the course of the next two to three weeks. The Thomas Center Galleries announce the upcoming Deeper into AQUIFERious: A Conversation with the Contributors held Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. (galleries open at 6 p.m.). Meet the world-renowned artists, cave divers, scientists, mapmakers and writers who contributed to the “AQUIFERious” book and exhibition, as they share their research and passion for the springs and the aquifer.

Join the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department to make the Drool and Ghoul Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest and Pool Party totally paw-some! This annual event takes place Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and is open to well-behaved dogs at the H. Spurgeon Cherry (Westside) Pool, which is located at 1001 NW 31st Dr. The pool and splash pad will be open to dogs, and there will be a costume contest, free dog baths, photos with pet(s), great local pet-business vendors and other fun activities! Admission to the event is $5. Proof of immunizations is required.

Paint your yard with the beautiful colors of native plants! They are adapted to variable weather conditions, and they are easy to maintain. Take advantage of the largest offering of native plants in north Florida during the 2015 Fall Native Plant sale, held Saturday Oct. 10 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Morningside Nature Center.  An exclusive member's sale is Friday, Oct. 9, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and is open to members of the Friends of Nature Parks (FNP) and to members of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS). Memberships are available at the gate. Cash, checks and debit/credit cards are accepted.  The sale is hosted cooperatively by Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, the Friends of Nature Parks (FNP) and Paynes Prairie chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS).

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (PRCA) Department is happy to announce that the park will be open seven days a week, including federal and state holidays, starting Thursday, Oct. 1. Sweetwater Wetlands Park was constructed by the City of Gainesville Public Works Department and Gainesville Regional Utilities to improve water quality at Paynes Prairie. Now managed by PRCA, the park contains three miles of trails and boardwalks, and offers spectacular wildlife watching opportunities. Sweetwater Wetlands Park is not only a place to connect with nature, it is also a way to protect our environment. Share your experiences on social media with #SweetwaterWetlandsPark.

Community 12TV (found on Cox Channel 12) will be off the air Monday, Sept. 28-Wednesday, Sept. 30. During that time, digital upgrades will be installed. Community 12TV will return Thursday, Oct. 1 with an enhanced signal. While the upgrades are being installed, the City of Gainesville's on demand videos will still be available for viewing.

The Gainesville City Commission will host its second Telephone Town Hall, talkGNV, to discuss the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s (PRCA) master plan, PRCA Vision 2020. City officials will answer caller questions about the master plan, including future enhancements to Gainesville’s park facilities and recreation opportunities, as well as discuss potential funding methods.
