City offices will observe the new year Friday, Jan. 1. There will be no change in curbside waste collection for New Year's week. RTS will run reduced service Dec. 31 and its holiday service on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, between 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 13, 15, 16, 20, 26 and 35.

The City Beautification Board, the City of Gainesville Planning and Development Services and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Departments, together with the Four Seasons Garden Club and the Matheson History Museum invite the Gainesville community to celebrate Florida Arbor Day Thursday, Jan. 21 from 12-1:30 p.m. The Florida Arbor Day celebration will be held at the Matheson Museum, which is located at 513 E. University Ave.

Celebrate with us as the City of Gainesville celebrates its 32nd year as a Tree City USA. We will plant 64 trees to honor these 32 years. Music and a light lunch will be provided.

In April 2015, the City Commission adopted a resolution creating the Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee on Economic Competitiveness (BRACEC) and appointed 23 members to the board. After several meetings, interviews, retreats and brainstorming sessions, the Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee on Economic Competitiveness presented the final Blue Ribbon report to the City Commission in early December 2015, which lays out changes suggested for Gainesville to be successful in its mission of being the most citizen-centered city in America. The report is now available for viewing online.

In observance of the holiday season, city offices will be closed Thursday, Dec. 24 and Friday, Dec. 25. There will not be a schedule change in curbside waste collection for Christmas week. RTS will run its holiday service on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, between 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 13, 15, 16, 20, 26 and 35. Paratransit service will also be available during these times. There will be no service Dec. 25.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is now accepting applications for the 2016-2018 grant periods. The following grants are available:

  • Outside Agency: This Outside Agency grant is to provide general operational support to cultural non-profit organizations inside Gainesville’s city limits during the funding period of Oct. 1, 2016-Sept. 30, 2018. Established non-profit cultural organizations with a registered 501(c)(3) that contributes to the cultural vitality of the City of Gainesville, produce quality arts and/or cultural activities are eligible. Cultural organizations that are part of education, government or taxing authorities are not eligible. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2016.
  • Arts Tag: The purpose of the Florida Arts Tag grant is to provide financial resources for a specific project to arts organizations, programs and activities. It is not the intent of this fund to support general operating expenses for an organization. The funding period is one year from date of approval by the Cultural Affairs Board. Alachua County non-profit cultural organizations with a registered 501(c)(3) are eligible to apply. Cultural organizations that are part of education, government or taxing authorities are not eligible. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2016.
The "City Manager’s Biweekly Report to the City Commission" provides information about significant upcoming activities, projects, and meetings in the City of Gainesville over the course of the next two to three weeks. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is happy to invite the community for a customer appreciation day Friday, Dec. 18 at Ironwood Golf Course. Celebrate with us as Ironwood Golf Course just received a brand new fleet of golf carts with several features that will make customers’ playing experience top notch. The fleet consists of 66 new TXT DC powered E-Z-GO golf carts ideal for hosting some of the top events in north central Florida with up to 132 players able to use the fleet at once. Everyone is invited to see the new carts, hit free range balls, enjoy complimentary hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza, and enter to win various prizes. Food will be served from 3:30-5:30 p.m., so come out and enjoy Ironwood and their new fleet of TXT golf carts.

Please join the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department in welcoming its new Tourism Marketing Technician, Jeremiah Stanley, a full-time position funded by the partnership with Visit Gainesville. Stanley will help the City of Gainesville maintain its presence with current tourism partners, as well as help establish new relationships. He’ll also help in the creation and distribution of marketing materials and the collecting of tourism data.

The newly formed Gainesville Arts & Parks (GAP) Foundation, Inc. is having its community launch Friday, Jan 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the Historic Thomas Center, which is located at 302 NE Sixth Ave. The event will showcase some of the best arts, parks and programs the city has to offer. The community is invited to an evening of live music by Expressions Learning Arts Academy students, a silent auction and a culinary arts demonstration by renowned local Chef Bert Gill. The event also feature tree giveaways, a book signing by Chef Gill of his new book, “Pickled, Fried and Fresh,” food and much more! The community kick-off celebration will highlight the many cultural, recreational and nature activities in Gainesville.
