GFR is accepting applications for Junior Fire Academy participants through Friday, May 9.  The Jr. Fire Academy will be held Monday, June 9- Thursday, June 12 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Applicants should be entering 6th - 8th grade. The camp's cost is $50.00 for city residents and $60.00 for non-residents.  Please email ottkk@cityofgainesville.org for more information or to submit an application.

Buffalo Spoonful, a new Gainesville band composed of veteran local musicians, will open the ‘Free Fridays” concert series with a tribute to English rock ‘n’ roll guitarist Eric Clapton. Clapton is the only artist to be inducted three times into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both as a solo artist and as a member of the bands The Yardbirds and Cream. He received 17 Grammy awards and is known as one of the most influential guitarists of all times. Buffalo Spoonful is founded by Mike Boulware (guitar/vocals/assorted string instruments), Tom Holtz (guitar/slide guitar/vocals) and Kevin Kennedy (bass/vocals). In addition to this core group, the band adds other members for different shows. Joining them for the Plaza Clapton tribute is Brad Bangstad (keyboards), Mike Branch, (drums), Jackson Boulware Dewitt (guitar/vocals) and Caroline Boulware (backing vocals). Buffalo Spoonful is dedicated to slightly eclectic rock/blues from the ‘60s, ‘70s and newer material.

The Thomas Center Galleries announce the opening of the ABOUT FACE Portraits with Presence exhibition to be presented in the Historic Thomas Center’s Main and Mezzanine Galleries from Friday, June 27 to Saturday, September 20. An opening reception for the exhibition will take place Friday, June 27 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The City of Gainesville is seeking eligible non-profit organizations to receive grants in support of activities that serve a public purpose and improve the quality of life for Gainesville residents. The purpose of the Community Grant Program is to provide small grants (up to $3,000) to non-profit organizations that support the City of Gainesville’s goals to provide services to needy individuals and families.

Applications for the City of Gainesville Special Assessment for Fire Services Hardship Assistance Programs are still available. The city offers two hardship programs, one for low-income senior citizens age 65 and over, and another for low-income citizens. Applications for the Special Assessment for Fire Services Hardship Assistance Programs for the 2014-2015 fiscal year are due by May 1, 2014. New applications must be submitted each year that the program is available. Senior applicants that were previously approved will need to only fill out the renewal form.

The Gainesville Fire Rescue Department is proud to announce it has received Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. Gainesville Fire Chief Gene Prince and Assistant City Manager Paul Folkers appeared before the Commission Tuesday, March 11. GFR is one of fewer than 200 agencies to achieve Internationally Accredited Agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE), joining other accredited Florida fire rescue departments from the Villages, Bradenton, Clearwater, Coral Gables, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Maitland, Winter Park, Orlando, Orange County, Broward County, Miami-Dade, Miami Beach, MacDill AFB, Largo, Key Biscayne, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Harbor and Temple Terrace.

The Thomas Center Galleries announces the opening of the Showcasing Student Art - Elementary Schools Exhibition presented by the Alachua County Public Schools Visual Arts Program, which is scheduled to run Saturday, April 5-Saturday, May 3 in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery. The exhibition includes 88 works of art that were created during the 2013-2014 school year in Alachua County elementary schools by students who were selected by 29 teachers from 26 participating schools.

To celebrate a great year in basketball, the City of Gainesville is asking citizens to donate $4, $40 or $400 to support a summer basketball program for Gainesville youth.
