UF School of Music, Center for World Arts Music Ensembles Close Out the 2018 “Free Fridays” Concert Series Oct. 19
The University of Florida’s World Music Ensembles present a “Free Fridays” concert at the Bo Diddley Plaza Friday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. The event features student and faculty musicians and dancers from UF’s College of the Arts. The lively evening of music and dance also features a guest appearance by world-renowned Brazilian guitarist Yamandú Costa.
Twice nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album (2010, 2014), Yamandú Costa is a composer, arranger, improviser and master performer on his Brazilian seven-string guitar. Extensive touring has showcased his genius and natural ability of enchanting the audience at sold out venues in Brazil and around the world. His passion and unique style have inspired many young musicians who are following his new school of playing the guitar.
The groups performing include:
- Sunshine Steelers (steel drum band) - Director Kenneth Broadway
- Pazeni Sauti Africa Choir - Director Elijah Adongo
- Jacaré Brazil with guest artist Yamandú Costa (Brazilian traditional and popular music), Directors Welson Tremura and Larry Crook
- Agbedidi Africa (West African dance and drum ensemble), Director Mohamed da Costa
The Center for World Arts (CWA) at the University of Florida promotes artistic diversity, linking local and global communities through the arts. Through an innovative infrastructure featuring performance, curriculum, media, research and outreach, the center advances interdisciplinary perspectives in the arts. In addition, the CWA provides intercultural academic arts programs open to all UF students, including significant arts practice and performance opportunities for students pursuing degrees in the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Dance. “Free Fridays” is presented by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. It is funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council and Culture Builds Florida. “Free Fridays” runs 8–10 p.m. each Friday night, from May 4 to Oct. 19 at Bo Diddley Plaza, 111 E. University Ave. in downtown Gainesville.
