Code Enforcement to Handle All Abandoned Vehicles

7/10/2018
City of Gainesville Code Enforcement will now handle all abandoned vehicles citywide, regardless of location. Previously, the Code Enforcement Division was only responsible for abandoned vehicles on private property and the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) handled those on roadways and public right-of-way. The change was made to reduce confusion about which agency should respond, and allow each agency to be more efficient.

An abandoned vehicle is defined by City of Gainesville code as, "any vehicle which appears to be incapable of safe operation under its own power upon public streets and/or any vehicles not having a current motor vehicle registration tag properly attached." All illegally parked vehicles on roadways and public right-of-way that do not fit the definition of an abandoned vehicle will continue to be handled by GPD.
