The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) is pleased to offer a free basketball clinic with the coaching staff from the Eastside High School Basketball team at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose (MLK) Center. The clinics are open to everyone, and are a great opportunity for those wishing to participate in PRCA’s Youth Coed Basketball league and hone their skills.
The clinics are Monday, Nov. 27 and Wednesday, Nov. 29, and offer a chance for youth to work with seasoned varsity players and their coaches on the fundamentals of the game. Participants will practice drills for shooting, dribbling, passing and more. The clinics are from 6-8 p.m. at the MLK Center, and are open to the public.
Youth Coed Basketball registration is filling up, so sign up soon. This league is for youth five to14 years-old, and teaches how character counts on and off the court. There are no try-outs, and each participant gets to play. Registration is currently open until Friday, Dec. 1, or until team rosters are filled. Participants are required to take an evaluation session so that they can be placed on a team. The evaluations will take place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose (MLK) Center, which is located at 1028 NE 14th St. Evaluation times and dates for age groups are as follows:
Monday, Dec. 4
Ages 5-6: 6-7 p.m.
Ages 7-8: 7-8 p.m.
Ages 9-10: 8-8:45 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 5
Ages 11-12:6-7 p.m.
Ages 13-14:7-8 p.m.
All Ages:8-8:45 p.m.
There is a mandatory parent meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at the MLK Center, where practice schedules will be distributed. Games begin in January, and run through March 2018, taking place in Alachua County and the surrounding areas on Saturdays. Time of play varies by age group.
