Gainesville Celebrates Florida City Government Week


The City of Gainesville is celebrating Florida City Government Week, October 23-29, 2017. For the 12th consecutive year, the City of Gainesville Communications Office is teaming with the School Board of Alachua County by inviting a group of fifth grade students to visit City Hall Tuesday, Oct. 24 where they will learn about city government.

The students are the October recipients of the Citizen of the Month award of Alachua County public schools. Students will learn more about city government by touring a variety of city facilities including City Hall, Depot Park, Gainesville Fire Rescue's Fire Station 3 and the Regional Transit System facility. The group will also have the opportunity to meet Assistant City Manager Dan Hoffman, see a K9 demonstration and participate in a mock City Commission meeting with Commissioner Harvey Budd. The students will travel by charter bus that has been generously provided by donations from Christina Flagg and the State Attorney's Office for the Eighth Judicial Circuit.

Because city government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents, municipal officials feel that they have a responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits.

Cities across Florida are celebrating City Government Week, sponsored by the Florida League of Cities (FLC), to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Headquartered in Tallahassee, the FLC is the official organization of the municipal governments (cities, towns, villages and chartered counties) in Florida, designed and established to meet and serve the needs of Florida's municipal officials.
