Gainesville 101: the 2017 Citizens' Academy is a seven-week program organized by the City of Gainesville Communications Office, and is designed to teach city residents about the inner workings of local government and city management.

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, city offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25. Residential curbside collection service for solid waste, recycling and yard trash normally scheduled for Thursday will be delayed until Friday. That is the only collection day that will be affected. All bus and paratransit service will be suspended Thanksgiving Day. RTS will provide holiday bus service Friday, Nov. 25. Routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 20, 26, 35, 43, 75 and 711 will run between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. All other routes will be suspended. Please plan accordingly.

Twenty years ago today, the City of Gainesville Public Works Department installed the city’s first baffle box. A total of four baffle boxes were installed during the project to filter out sediments from stormwater entering the Sweetwater Branch.

The City of Gainesville is celebrating Florida City Government Week, October 16-22, 2016. For the 11th consecutive year, the City of Gainesville Communications Office is teaming with the School Board of Alachua County by inviting a group of fifth grade students to visit City Hall Tuesday, Oct. 18 where they will learn about city government.

Due to the large amount of curbside residential yard trash caused by Hurricane Hermine, yard trash collection continues to run behind normal schedules.
