The City of Gainesville’s Urban Forestry promotes the benefits of trees, maintains the urban forest to ensure diversity of age and species, mitigates canopy loss, minimizes hazards; and conserves the high quality heritage trees that make Gainesville a “city in a forest.”

Did you know that beginning in 1983, Gainesville received the Tree City USA designation because of the combined efforts of the City Beautification Board (CBB), the Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) and the Florida Division of Forestry. 



City of Gainesville Urban Forest Ecological Analysis 2016

This is a video on the results from the inventory of Gainesville’s urban forest, which was completed in partnership between University of Florida, School of Forest Resources & Conservation (SFRC) Associate Professor Michael Andreu and the City of Gainesville’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, from May to October 2016. The goal was to quantify the features and values of Gainesville's urban forest. The research team used the i-Tree Eco model. Tree Ordinance Stakeholder Committee Materials

The Tree Ordinance Stakeholder Committee has been asked to make recommendations for quick changes to incentives for tree preservation, equity of tree mitigation requirements, uses of tree mitigation funds, and the economic impact of tree mitigation to the Gainesville City Commission.
